Emergency Dentistry Q&A

When might I need emergency dentistry care?

Some of the many dental emergencies that the Natural Smile Dentistry team handles include:

  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Severely cracked or chipped tooth
  • Loose crown
  • Toothache
  • Loose adult tooth
  • Uncontrollable gum, cheek, or tongue bleeding

These dental emergencies can happen in many ways, from auto accidents to sports injuries. Sometimes the problem may happen with no prior warning. For example, a small cavity may have grown into a very large one without treatment, leading to a major infection (abscess) that causes severe pain.

How can I relieve pain until I get emergency dentistry care?

Call the office as soon as a problem develops, but in the meantime, you can do a few things to ease pain if you have a toothache.

  • Brush, rinse, and floss your teeth
  • Apply an ice pack to your jaw
  • Take an oral over-the-counter pain reliever
  • Avoid touching a painful tooth

These temporary measures may somewhat ease your pain until you see the professionals at Natural Smile Dentistry.

What should I do about a knocked-out tooth?

For an adult tooth, rinse your tooth in cool water, touching only the white part of the tooth as you do so. Place the tooth back into the socket. You can hold the tooth in place using gauze or a clean washcloth.

If you can’t keep the tooth in its socket, drop it into a cup of cow’s milk or cool tap water. Alternatively, you can cover it with saliva.

The process is different for a baby tooth. Retrieve the tooth and preserve it in milk, water, or saliva and bring it into the office. Don’t try to replace a baby tooth in the socket, as this may damage the adult tooth underneath it.

The faster you get to Natural Smile Dentistry with a knocked-out tooth, the better the chance of successful replantation.

How long is the wait for emergency dentistry care?

Natural Smile Dentistry prioritizes emergencies. The team makes room in the schedule for urgent dental care every day, so in most cases, they can schedule your emergency appointment right away. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it.
