Are your teeth discolored and making you feel self-conscious? Tooth discoloration is natural over time and can worsen as our enamel wears down. Dentin (the yellow core of our teeth) tends to show through as our enamel thins over time and our teeth start to look yellow. This can be reversed through teeth whitening in Plano TX and professional bleaching.

Teeth Whitening Methods
We currently offer two methods of Plano teeth whitening: take-home whitening kits and in-office bleaching.
Professional Whitening Kits
Professional whitening kits can provide patients with the flexibility to whiten their teeth from the comfort of your own home. Whitening kits can be more cost-effective and can still be highly effective in lightening tooth discoloration. The process takes about two weeks and can lighten teeth by about four-to-five shades. Ask Dr. Mainker if whitening kits would be an effective way to lighten your tooth discoloration.
In-office bleaching provides the most effective results in the shortest amount of time. This process can be completed in as little as one hour and leaves your smile looking eight-to-ten shades brighter. Professional teeth bleaching can be the more expensive option but consult with Dr. Mainker to determine if you can choose a payment plan to help your smile look instantly brighter when you need it.
Professional teeth whitening is a very common way to improve the appearance of your smile. In-office treatments are very simple and can be completed in just one visit. Dr. Mainker will apply a whitening gel that contains highly-concentrated hydrogen peroxide. She will then use UV light to activate the bleaching agent to lift the discoloration. After about 30-60 minutes, your teeth will be several shades lighter, and they may even continue to lighten for about 24 hours afterward.
If you choose an at-home whitening kit, you’ll wear whitening trays nightly for about two weeks. This will gradually lighten discoloration by about four-to-five shades over the course of the treatment. The whitening trays contain concentrated hydrogen peroxide, though it is lower than the substance used in-office. This will gently bleach your tooth’s enamel daily until the treatment is completed.
Can anyone whiten their teeth?
Teeth whitening can be beneficial for almost any smile. However, there are some instances when tooth whitening may not be effective. If a tooth is a dark brown, grey, or lavender, the discoloration may be irreversible. A grey or lavender shadow over the tooth may be a sign that your tooth is dead and may need to be extracted, and dark brown may be too serious to lighten. If your tooth is a yellow shade, it is possible that your discoloration can be completely lifted. Consult with Dr. Mainker to find out if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening.
There are some side-effects to teeth whitening in Plano TX, though they are very mild and should subside. Tooth sensitivity is normal after treatment and will likely only last about a day or two. If tooth sensitivity is severe and does persist after treatment, consult with Dr. Mainker. If you are prone to sensitive teeth, teeth whitening may not be the best option for your smile. Bonding or dental veneers may be more suitable options for your smile because they offer an extra layer of protection to your tooth’s enamel, while also providing you with the cosmetic improvement that you are looking for.
